The Tao of Color

July 28th, 2010

Being a color geek myself, I wanted to give a shout-out to our friend Patrick Inhofer of FINI.tv   He has a new website devoted to educating people about the art and science of color grading:  The Tao of Color

Shooting Dark Prophecy on the Canon 5D – Level 26.

A well-written, highly detailed article on using the Canon 5D for production for the next installment of Anthony Zuiker’s LEVEL 26.

LA Shorts Fest 2010

July 10th, 2010

L’ACCORDATORE will be screening at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Theatres in Hollywood on Sunday, July 25, at 5:30 pm as part of LA Shorts Fest PROGRAM #17.

I don’t think I’ll be able to be there for the screening, as I’ll be at Comic-Con earlier in the week and then I’ll be on my way up to Vancouver, BC, (the center of the sci-fi TV universe) via Portland, OR, for a bit of vacation.

Best Short Film, 2010 LVFF

July 2nd, 2010

It’s been crazy since I returned to Nyack a couple of weeks ago, so it doesn’t surprise me that I completely forgot to post about our trip to Sin City.  Still, how on earth could I ever forget that we won Best Short Film!  We screened in the first block of Shorts on Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday morning producer George Elias and myself took part in the Filmmaker’s Panel.

The Philly Indie Fest was last weekend, and in a few weeks, we screen out in Los Angeles at LA ShortFest.

Interesting article on color sub-sampling

July 1st, 2010

ProVideo Coalition.com: Adobe Beyond Adobe by Adobe | Vendor Blog.

This post has a very easy to understand explanation on the differences between 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0 color sub-sampling in video.

It also points out that the Canon HD-DSLR cameras shoot in a compressed MPEG-2 format with a color space of 4:2:0, which doesn’t necessarily mean that you get “more color” if you convert the clips to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.

One of the best reasons I can see for converting or transcoding the H264 encoded Canon clips to something like ProRes422 in software like Grinder, is that the resulting uncompressed file (or more correctly less compressed) file will give you more wiggle room to push pixels around in compositing and/or color grading.

Post-Production Starts in Pre-Production for Indie Moviemakers

June 28th, 2010

Post-Production Starts in Pre-Production for Indie Moviemakers | MovieMaker Magazine.

I found this article to be interesting and a bit prescient, as we (David & myself) begin to think about re-branding ourselves as the company approaches our 5th anniversary.

We seem to be doing much more than just visual effects work now, almost as if we were a full-service indie post-production company.  So stay tuned as we begin the metamorphosis…

I’m out in San Francisco this month and the next, networking and catching up with local events like BAWIFM’s 7th Anniversary, the SF Photoshop Meetup, and the SF Cutters monthly meeting.

As of 10pm on Friday April 30th, I’m taking part in the San Francisco Film Race 2010 as part of the Earthquakes team, lead by Director/Writer Carrie Nowocin.

I just got our script for the shoot…production starts in a few hours.  Check back for a post-race blog and maybe even a few behind-the-scenes pictures.

Latest project: “CONFINED”, a horror short shot on the Canon 7D

April 15th, 2010

The weekend before last, David and I worked on our next project in the pipeline, the horror short “CONFINED”.    It was a two camera shoot, using the new Canon 7D HD-DSLR.  David was Second Unit Director, and I was DIT for the single day shoot, as well as Post/VFX Supervisor for the project.  I also got a chance to work with a beta of Red Giant Software’s Grinder, which does a great job of transcoding the heavily compressed H264 QuickTime clips into Apple ProRes 422. For ease of editing, and to give us a bit more to work with when doing VFX and Grading.

The project is currently in the edit stage, I’ll post a bit more when it’s back in-house for finishing. Until then, you can catch up with the news and watch the brand-spanking new trailer here:  CONFINED Blog & Trailer
