‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ = lots of fun

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I think the last time I saw a movie on opening weekend was The X-Files – I Want to Believe.   Today a few of us went to see Monsters vs. Aliens.  For purely educational purposes, of course. *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*   We opted for the full 3D effect, which was surprisingly good.  There were a couple of spots where I thought  it was overdone, but in general it added to the telling of the story rather than over-powering it.

It’s a very silly movie, that appeals on 2 levels.  It has the silly stuff that the kids love, along with enough pop culture references and in-jokes to keep the adults giggling along with them.  I saw it with a couple of native New Yorkers, in a theatre full of kids on a rainy Sunday afternoon, and there were definitely a couple times when I was the only one laughing.  The locals-only in-jokes gave me twinges of homesickness for San Francisco.

Great characters, a silly plot, and stunning animation made the perfect escape for a rainy Sunday aftern0on.

Goings on…

If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s one more day to see STEAM at Cinema Village in Manhattan.
We have a couple of possibilities on the horizon, but I can’t say anything more until all the ‘i’s are dotted and ‘t’s are crossed.  I can say that I’ll be attending NAB in Las Vegas this year.  I’m really looking forward to hearing David Eick talk about the amazing story that is Battlestar Galactica.

“Steam” opens in LA and NYC

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks. (what time zone am I in?)

I flew out to San Francisco to give a presentation on stitching in Photoshop CS4 to the SF Photoshop Meet-up on March 12th (thank you John Nack for pimpin’ me in your blog), then flew down the next day to attend the opening night of STEAM at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in West Hollywood.   I flew back to NY on the 15th and spent the week making sure things were ready for our opening in Manhattan at Cinema Village on the 19th. It’s showing for a week, so you still have time to see it.

I just have to say that the projection at Cinema Village is gorgeous and I’ve seen STEAM in several venues projected off of several different kinds of media.  At Cinema Village, we’re screening in 1080P from Blu-ray through a DLP projector, and it looks exactly the way I expected it to. Yay!  Make of that what you will, I freely admit to being highly biased as I did the final color correction on the HD feature.

I took a few pictures at both openings, which you can find posted HERE. Please don’t hot link to them, and if you post them elsewhere please credit the images to: Lisa Yimm/HDR-VFX 2009
