This week I’ll be off to Las Vegas for the US premiere of “L’Accordatore (The Tuner)” on Saturday, June 5th.
We’ve also just been informed that the short has been selected by the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival which runs June 23-27th, 2010.

I’m out in San Francisco this month and the next, networking and catching up with local events like BAWIFM’s 7th Anniversary, the SF Photoshop Meetup, and the SF Cutters monthly meeting.
As of 10pm on Friday April 30th, I’m taking part in the San Francisco Film Race 2010 as part of the Earthquakes team, lead by Director/Writer Carrie Nowocin.
I just got our script for the shoot…production starts in a few hours. Check back for a post-race blog and maybe even a few behind-the-scenes pictures.
The weekend before last, David and I worked on our next project in the pipeline, the horror short “CONFINED”. It was a two camera shoot, using the new Canon 7D HD-DSLR. David was Second Unit Director, and I was DIT for the single day shoot, as well as Post/VFX Supervisor for the project. I also got a chance to work with a beta of Red Giant Software’s Grinder, which does a great job of transcoding the heavily compressed H264 QuickTime clips into Apple ProRes 422. For ease of editing, and to give us a bit more to work with when doing VFX and Grading.
The project is currently in the edit stage, I’ll post a bit more when it’s back in-house for finishing. Until then, you can catch up with the news and watch the brand-spanking new trailer here: CONFINED Blog & Trailer
Our RED-lensed short film L’ACCORDATORE (The Tuner) is an official selection of the Las Vegas Film Festival, June 4-6, 2010! The short will make its US Premiere at the festival, screening in the first Shorts Block on Saturday, June 5th at 2pm in the Shimmer Theatre of the Las Vegas Hilton.
As mentioned in a previous blog, L’ACCORDATORE makes its International Premiere at the Rincon International Film Festival in Puerto Rico, next Wednesday, April 21st, 2010.
Neither David, nor I, will be attending the annual National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas this year, but that doesn’t mean HDR-VFX won’t have a presence there.
If you’re at NAB, make sure you stop by the Plugin Pavilion (near Adobe) in the Lower South Hall and visit the folks at Automatic Duck – NAB Booth SL3039 - because you’ll get to see a short clip from our short film “L’Accordatore (The Tuner)” that’s included in the loop that will be playing on the big plasma screen in their booth this year!
The Pro Import AE plugin played a huge part in our post-production workflow when we worked on The Tuner last year. Below is a still from clip:
And if you can’t go to NAB, you can still see their customer showcase on the web:
Late last year we did some digital clean up work on a project of which the title and subject can’t be mentioned. I did however want to mention that we utilized the nifty new After Effects plugin from Digital Anarchy – Beauty Box. It does an amazing job retouching and evening out skin tones. However, like our unmentionable project, the good folks at Digital Anarchy can’t actually show you BEFORE/AFTER images of the plugin in action! None of the subjects wants to: a) admit they’ve actually used it, and b) allow actual unretouched images to be published.
Testimonials for Beauty Box Plugin
So instead of actual artist examples, they’ve got a testimonial page with quotes from some of their customers. We gave them a glowing review, because Beauty Box made a huge difference in how we handled that project, and increased our productivity, allowing us to meet some pretty insane deadlines and keep the customer happy.
Thanks to our friend Bob Groothuis, subscribers of 3D World magazine got a treasure trove of free HDRIs, in the form of SiBL sets, on the DVD included with the March issue of the magazine. Now, those free SiBL sets are available for download from the 3D World website, for a limited time only! From now until May 4th, you can download stunning images donated by Bob Groothuis from his Dutch Skies 360 series, Christian Bloch of HDRLabs, Charles Leo of Lunar Studio/HDR Source, and HDR-VFX.
“L’Accordatore (The Tuner)” is an official selection of the Rincon International Film Festival, in San Juan, Puerto Rico! I hope this will be the first of many…
Last night’s SF Photoshop Meetup was really interesting. A great presentation from Marine Leroux of Bambou Design on designing iPhone applications using Photoshop.
Today, I’ll be taking a couple of the free workshops that are part of this year’s FCPUG SuperMeet. Should be a fun but very long day!
Wednesday night’s MoPictive meeting was amazing. Our short was shown on Blu-Ray and it looked great. I’m especially happy that it was so well received by an audience of our peers. Oh, and then there’s that magic little box that David won in the raffle – we’re now waiting for our AJA KiPro.
That will complement our EX-1 nicely.
I’m off to San Francisco for a few weeks. You’ll be able to find me at the SFCutters, the SF Photoshop Meetup, and this year’s FCPUG SuperMeet. I’m actually thinking of skipping MacWorld this year… O_o
And the first season of FenceSitter Films “Rose By Any Other Name” is almost done. You can watch Episode 10 right now. More later, from the Left Coast…
