HD Magazine – HD Mag – How Apples iPad Streamlines Work On Set.

I’ve had many people ask me if I’m going to buy and iPad.  So far I haven’t seen any good reason to spend the money because I always carry both an iPhone and my 15″ MacBook Pro.

However, this is a great description of how useful an iPad can be on-set, and how it can be used to help manage the TBs of data generated when shooting with a file-based digital HD camera.

Latest project: “CONFINED”, a horror short shot on the Canon 7D

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The weekend before last, David and I worked on our next project in the pipeline, the horror short “CONFINED”.    It was a two camera shoot, using the new Canon 7D HD-DSLR.  David was Second Unit Director, and I was DIT for the single day shoot, as well as Post/VFX Supervisor for the project.  I also got a chance to work with a beta of Red Giant Software’s Grinder, which does a great job of transcoding the heavily compressed H264 QuickTime clips into Apple ProRes 422. For ease of editing, and to give us a bit more to work with when doing VFX and Grading.

The project is currently in the edit stage, I’ll post a bit more when it’s back in-house for finishing. Until then, you can catch up with the news and watch the brand-spanking new trailer here:  CONFINED Blog & Trailer

Top 10 tips for producing cheaper (or should that be cost-effective?) TV

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

As someone who is still finishing up our first in-house production, I found this article n producing quality television on a budget to be very interesting and informative.  Notable for the comments from producers of some of the best shows on TV today, including Spooks (shown in the US as MI-5) which is one of my favorites.
